2009 Minutes
December 2009 Meeting Minutes
Here are a few items to finish off the year.
A reminder that the Chap Book is to be launched on Saturday 12th December from 10-12.30 at the Kiosk. (The Kiosk is near the Food Depot.) Everyone is welcome to assist in drawing the public's attention to 'Pre-Scribe'.
These are our meeting dates for 2010:
- 18 February, 18 March, 15 April, 20 May, 17 June, 15 July, 19 August, 16 September, 21 October, 18 November,
16 December
There are three special events to look forward to next year:
1. Ficofolia Festival 12 February
2. Gippsland Cultural Festival during May (as well as the Emerging Writers' Festival in Melbourne)
3. 'Playing with Words' event in July
Finally, if you have suggestions of what YOU want featured in our monthly meetings please let us know. Rod is in charge of coordinating these presentations, so send your suggestions to him, or Jeannie, or simply email the whole group.
I leave for NZ in seven hours and don't return till the 19th, so have fun at the launch and the end-of-year function - I'm sorry to be missing them. The Chap Book is out and looks fantastic! My 20 copies are either ready to be posted, or in my suitcase.

November 2009 Meeting Minutes
PRESENT
Maree Wallace, Deece Campbell, Tanya Dawes, Esther Martin, Janet Marsh, Jeannie Haughton, Jami Elliott, Robyn Wade, Carol Campbell, Rodney Williams, Merrilyn Mawman, Kathy Garraway,Jean Marler, Geraldine Burrowes, Olive Lyon (15) Apologies were received from: Angela Schafrenaar and Doug Tandberg
CHAPBOOK
Tanya not only gave a report on where the Chapbook is at she even produced the first draft copy. (Great work, Tanya!) The launch will be at the Apex Hut in Warragul on 12 December from 10.00-12.30. Please come along and be a seller. Janet is to produce a blurb about who we are and how to join up, as an insert. There was discussion on the cost of the chapbook and the price of $7 was decided. (The Chapbook actually costs $4.30 per copy so this will give us some much needed funding.) Copies are to be given to the various groups who have supported us over the past years, i.e. one copy per group. Great appreciation was given to Rod and Tanya for their work and effort and already there was talk about next year's edition with the possibility of short, short stories and artistic contributions.
SUBSCRIPTIONS
Deece actioned the decision we made last meeting and called for subscriptions to be submitted. There was a flurry of activity as purses and wallets were flourished. If you have not paid your subscription – watch out! ($20 and $15 concession.)
END OF YEAR BREAK-UP
We have been invited to be a part of the Creative Gippsland Break-up function. This will be held at 6.30pm on December 17th at Gary Miles's place. A map and directions will be emailed beforehand. About 8-10 people indicated they would be attending. We will also be promoting our Chapbook at this event with some readings from it. This will be our last meeting before February.
COMING UP
On Friday, February 12, 2010 there is the Ficifolia Festival in Drouin. The theme this year is Sport. There was discussion as to whether the Threads Story could fit into this and Jeannie and Rod will work on this and send the story out by email.
In May there is the Gippsland Cultural Festival and our Playing with Words in July.
The advantage of joining in with the bigger festivals is that they cover the insurance costs thus making it very easy for us to be part of something bigger without the expense. (Hear! Hear!)
PRESENTATION
Carol Campbell showed an amazing DVD she had produced entitled Common Threads. This was a compilation of the stories of Gippsland women's lives before, during, and after the war. The whole endeavour began as a Monash candidate's Ph.D. project; a book entitled Peripheral Vision has also been produced. Carol learned/learnt an amazing number of skills with her involvement with this project. (Well done, Carol!)
WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING FOR EVERYONE?
A share-around indicated some wonderful success stories in the group and some re-awakenings. Maree, Olive, Esther, Deece (Art Therapy at Cooindra Lodge), Jeannie (Female Playwrights' Conference in India), and Rodney (poems in Eureka and Presence) were amongst some of the highlights.
WORKSHOPPING
The evening concluded with writings by Jami and Robyn being work shopped.
The meeting finished at 9.30. See you all next year!

October 2009 Meeting Minutes
PRESENT
Tanya Dawes, Karen Whittaker-Taylor; Kathy Garraway, Jeannie Haughton, Olive Lyon, Jean Marler, Janet Marsh, Maree Wallace, Rodney Williams, Esther Martin, Deece Campbell, Angela Schafrenaar, Robyn Wade, Doug Tandberg.
GENERAL BUSINESS
What's happening?
The meeting began with members sharing their recent successes and re-stimulation. Olive has begun to write again and enter competitions; Janet recently came 'runner up' in a competition advertised in VWC and also has two poems accepted for publication in 'Gifts from Many Cultures' 2011; Tanya was short-listed for 'Page Seventeen' and had a good rejection letter; Rodney is to have a poem published in 'Eureka'. (I will email the feature to everyone. JM)
Mailing list
The mailing list (emails and phone numbers) is in the process of being updated.
PRESENTATION
Maree Wallace presented her work on 'What's On in Baw Baw Country'. This is a promotional magazine which she initiated and still runs - single-handedly. It was an inspiring presentation.
OPPORTUNITIES
1. The Art Therapy course at Cooinda in Warragul is asking for a volunteer to produce profiles of the ten artists who have produced work for an exhibition on 16 November. This would involve interviewing the artists/staff of the rest home. Deece expressed interest and will follow this up.
2. A Cultural Festival is to be held in May in Drouin. Do we want to be part of it? Discussion followed about us being involved in a 'connecting threads' story. It was decoded that we would each write a 200-word story and the final 10 words would be passed onto the next person to continue 'the thread'. (Details have already been emailed.)
IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE EVENTS
We will continue with the present format: workshop then presentation
What courses for writers are on offer? (Rodney)
The facilitation of a yoga/meditation writing exercise (Angela)
Camping o/night at Gary Miles (?)
The 'rostering' of supper dishes to move away from high sugar/carb biscuits (Esther)
Open Gardens event this weekend (Maree)
CHAPBOOK
Rodney spoke on behalf of the editorial team about submissions for the Chapbook. Basically, the pieces offered fell into one of three categories:
1. ready
2. worthy - with some adjustments
3. not yet ready for publication
With the concept that 'feedback is to be cherished, not rejected' Rodney then spoke individually with all who had submitted pieces.
Other discussion re the Chapbook included: printing possibilities and promotion.
READING
The meeting finished with Doug reading from his unpublished novel and receiving feedback.
NEXT MEETING
Thursday 19th November. 6.15 for discussion re the programme (open to all) and 7.00 for general meeting. Supper: Savoury item (Janet) and fruit (Deece)
Happy writing everyone!
