1. In future all emails sent to the Network will be BCC. The Exec, however, for their own business will not use BCC. Moved: Liz Jacobsen and Seconded by Geraldine Burrowes.
2. All groups outside the Network who want to advertise an event will send an email to the Secretary or President and they will then forward them onto the group.

ONGOING REPORTS
Pre-Scribe 2
Hard copy invitations for the Launch on December 11th were handed out. The welcome news is that this event is now FREE! Email invitations have already been circulated. [Toby please can you put this on the website]
Tanya was able to show us the stunning front cover, inform us that the publication is now 78 pages long (compared to 26 for last year) and that it is off to the Printers tomorrow. (Kage Company:Design &Photography). Because of its size the publication can no longer be stapled but will have a 'something-something' binding! (Sorry didn't quite catch the term!) All members who have paid $10 for their own copy will receive one but the final cost of the publication for public sale at the Launch will only be known once we have costings back from the Printers. Details will be circulated as soon as they are known.
Janet will place the Event on Face Book and Maree will advertise it through her 'What's on this weekend in Gippsland'.
Website
Toby/Jamie was able to update us on the website and alert us to the decisions that await us in the future. There have been some problems regarding inappropriate advertising appearing on the website and so Toby changed the website from bawbawwriters.org to bawbawwriters.blogspot.com
From then on there were difficulties with it being re-directed from .org to .blogspot (nothing is ever simple). In the end it was Moved by Esther and Seconded by Liz that the Exec along with Toby explore the options of a local server. Kathy Garraway has offered to help Toby with website work.
Re Pre-Scribe2 and the website: Thank you Tanya, Rodney and Toby for this extra and extraordinary work you do and have done on our behalf.
FUTURE DIRECTION
In the Agenda many suggestions were noted for our programme and the events we are involved in. To assist the Exec, in planning for the future, members were asked to fill out the following questionnaire:
- Why do you attend BBWN?
- What do you hope to achieve by being part of this Network?
- What do you want us to provide for you?
After the Survey was completed the following points were made:
1. Janet would like to produce, with assistance, a small brochure spelling out our aims, programme and contact/venue details for 2011. (This may just be a dream)
2. If we want to continue hosting Events then there is a need for sub-groups to lead and promote them.
3. How do we fund these Events?
4. The theme for the Ficofolia Festival 2011 is 'Stars come to Drouin'. The Poetry reading evening is on Friday, February 11th 2011. [So get your pens to work!]
5. The theme for the Gippsland Creative Arts Festival in May is 'Light'. [Again get your pens to work!]
SUPPER Barbie and Janet provided supper – thank you women!
WRITING HIGHLIGHTS AND WORKSHOPPING
After the supper break every member was able to share how their writing was progressing, or not. It was very encouraging to hear of accomplishments and people being inspired. Afterwards Lisa, Judy, Toby and Geraldine offered their pieces for work-shopping Thank you!
Please remember for 2011 if you are wanting to workshop your writing then please bring up to 15 copies.
NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting is on January 20th 2011 at Drouin Library. There is no Thursday meeting in December, instead our final Event will be the Pre-Scribe 2 Launch at 7pm on December 11th at Swaffields in Trafalgar. Please RSVP asap to [email protected] or ring Jeannie on XXXX-XXXX

MATTERS ARISING
Meeting time
After a short discussion it was decided to keep the meeting to the third Thursday of each month.
CORRESPONDENCE
In: A letter from the Regional Arts of Victoria was received. We still owe $110.00
Out: A get-well card to be sent to Olive Lyon
PRESENTATION BY COUNCILLOR JULIE GRANT
Jeannie introduced Julie Grant, a Social Scientist, who has been a Councillor with the Baw Baw Shire for the last four months. The topic under discussion was the local Outdoor Pool. It will not be salvaged, but of importance to writers, poets, artists and historians is the recording of memories associated with it; its construction, and the significant of the Koori art work.
On Saturday, December 4th there is going to be an outdoor party at the site of the pool and in mid-January demolition work is due to start. After considerable discussion it was decided that maybe a sub-group should be formed of ones who are interested in taking this matter further and exploring the possibilities re Oral History. [Since the meeting Jeannie has sent out an email] The results will be discussed at the next meeting.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Kathy Garraway is unable to continue in her role as Treasurer because of deteriorating health issues. We are more than keen for someone to fill this vacancy. [Since then I am ecstatic to report that Liz Jacobsen has stepped into this position – bravo Liz!]
Sponsorship of $500.00 has been received to promote our work/raise our profile/launch Pre-Scribe 2. This came from a pharmaceutical group in Moe.

Jeannie and Judy provided a delicious and substantial supper – thank you women. Next month Janet and Barbara Galloway will be on the roster.
PRESENTATION
Rodney Williams, fresh from his pilgrimage to the States, presented a marvellous workshop on 'Poetry as Travel'. Full notes had been circulated prior to the meeting and so were available for people to reflect on both beforehand and afterwards. Thank you Rodney for sharing such a moving and deeply personal journey. How well Eliot is able to sum it up: 'We shall not cease from exploration / And the end of all our exploring … will be to … know the place for the first time.' Thank you Rodney.
Our next meeting is this Thursday, November 18th, at the Old Drouin Butter Factory. Please note we meet shortly after 6pm for business and begin the presentations/workshops at 7.00. Everyone is invited to attend both parts of the evening. If you are bringing material for work shopping please ensure that you have 12-16 copies for others to read.

Productive writing to you all.

MATTERS ARISING
October Gardavalia Festival
Next month there will be a garden festival in Warragul and district. The BBWN have been asked to contribute with original and classical poetry and short prose at David 'Wombat' Lyons Garden, 40 Scanlons Road, Yarragon. The dates we will be performing are: Sunday the 17th and the 24th from 2pm onwards. Last month the following indicated their availability, and enthusiasm, to be involved: Olive, Jeannie, Jill, Liz, Janet, Geraldine, Esther, Jean (via Olive), Rodney, and Kathy. Any others are also welcome to attend. It was suggested that those taking part could type out their contributions, put them on stakes, and leave them in different parts of the garden. Rather than arrange transport it was decided that members would car-pool or make their own way out to David Lyons's place.
Literary Lunch
The Literary Lunch held at the Warragul Community House on September 11th was voted a great success, especially with the contribution from Phlegm Fatale. The next lunch is due to be held on Saturday, December 11th. For this occasion everyone is asked to bring a plate.
Pre-Scribe 2
Work is progressing well on our latest publication with the submission and acceptance process being described as 'rigorous'. It was decided to include an ISSN number in this issue. The compiling of accepted submissions will continue once Rodney has returned from his Study Leave in the USAThe final chapbook promises to be considerably larger and even better than last year's edition.
OTHER BUSINESS
There was discussion regarding our meeting night on the third Thursday of each month. The Workshop Coordinator (Rodney Williams) is unable to be present for several meetings a year on the third Thursday because of prior work commitments. It was decided to give the matter some thought and make a decision at the next meeting.
PRESENTATION
Tanya (mother-to-be) led a presentation on contemporary Australian poetry. She encouraged us to browse through several books on offer and consider the questions of why we loved, or hated, a chosen piece; how did we initially read it; what was it saying and, in particular, to whom? It was a thoughtful evening with many loves and hates being represented. Thank you Tanya for sharing some of your enthusiasm for this particular aspect of poetry.
Thanks also to Olive and Merrilyn for a tantalising supper – which we barely made a dint in. For October Jeannie and Judy have offered their services.
Our next meeting is on Thursday, October 21st at the Old Drouin Butter Factory. Please note we meet shortly after 6pm for business and begin the presentations/workshops at 7.00. Gippsland Heritage Park Writers' Group
A new Writers' Group has started in Moe at the Old Gippstown Heritage Park. It will be held on the last Saturday of each month with the next meeting being on 28.09. at 1.30pm. There is a $10 joining fee. For more details contact Liz Buckingham (email details above). Kathy reported that the writing theme for the next event is “Folk Remedies”. We wish the group well and offer support and encouragement.
Literary Lunch
The next lunch to be held at Warragul Community House is on September 11th from 12-2.00pm. Please contact the Community House for registration details. Apparently the last one was superb.
“Knowing Vincent”
Jenni Ivins has invited us to attend the Melbourne Writers' Festival launch of Marian Spire's first novel, “Knowing Vincent”. It is on Saturday 28th August at 2.30pm at Feddish@Fed Square, 2 Swanston Walk.
Coal Creek Literary Festival
The details for this Festival and competition are online, simply google: Coal Creek Literary Festival. There appear to be two closing dates: either 24th or 30th September. The word limit for adult short fiction is 500 words and 20 lines for poetry.
Pre-Scribe 2. There was considerable discussion over the creative and collaborative processes of writing/art work/illustration. It is a learning curve for all of us. [The submission guidelines were emailed out some time ago so if you have not received a copy please let me know.] People are encouraged to continue submitting material – especially those haiku from the last meeting!
WELCOME
A welcome was extended to newcomers: Jill Campbell and Wendy Thompson; it's good to have you on-board.
PRESENTATION
Jo McInerney gave an outstanding presentation, complete with data projector, on Haiku and Tanka. It was a privilege to be in the presence of a master of the craft, be shown examples of award-winning poetry, and have our work receive immediate and critical comments. Thank you very much, Jo.
The meeting, which was held in the theatre because of bulb blow-outs in the basement, closed about 9.15. Thanks to the Karen and Liz for a great supper – which again we didn't do justice to. For September Merrilyn and Olive have offered their services. Our next meeting is on Thursday, September 16th at the Old Drouin Butter Factory. We meet at 6.15 for business and at 7.00 for the presentation and work-shopping. Everyone is invited to attend both parts of the evening. Please bring along your 'works in progress' to share with others – and still dress warmly. No need to bring a name tag as we now have our own official ones.
Happy and successful writing and submitting everyone.

July 2010 Meeting Minutes
PRESENT
Esther Martin, Rodney Williams, Olive Lyon, Geraldine Burrowes, Janet Marsh, Mary Young, Jo Van de Burgt, Karen Pierrehumbert, Barbara Perry, Barbara Erskine, Bill Frew, Kathy Garraway, Lee Brown, Liz Jacobsen, Carmel Brotherton, Merrilyn Mawman [please note the correct spelling of Merrilyn's family name!] (16)
APOLOGIES
Jeannie Haughton, Maree Wallace, Toby Hansen, Robyn Wade, Tanya Dawes and Jean Marler. [Jeannie and Maree were attending the Creative Gippsland function in order to promote Pre-Scribe 2]
TREASURER'S REPORT
Tanya, the new treasurer, is away but she left a note saying that $585.00 was banked from Playing with Words. The final figure, after various bills are paid, will be available next month.
MATTERS ARISING
Playing with Words. There was considerable discussion about the the weekend's event. Regarding the price some thought it was too cheap; others quite reasonable. If the cost was increased, would that prevent people from attending? Some favoured smaller groups with a variety of presenters; others enjoyed the fact that we were all together for the whole event. The small attendance, in comparison to last year, caused us to question our advertising technique, plus the fact that it was held in the school holidays.
There was great enthusiasm expressed over the science component with Fred Watson and Jack Dann; Vicki Thornton was appreciated for her contribution and exercises, and Peter Bakowski for divulging his poetic processes.
The following is a result of the 18 feedback forms:
How did you find out about the event:
word of mouth – 6; newspaper – 3; email – 1; VWC magazine – 1; leaflets around town – 2; writers' network – 1; BBWN – 11.
What benefited you most:
practical tips/suggestions; social aspect of meeting like-minded people; level-headed plain English speakers; sci-fi – 6; moving out of comfort subjects; networking; enthusiasm; inspiration; Fred!; widening of ideas, contacts and info.
What would you like us to include next year”
how to write Oral History; more work shopping; don't start off with rows of chairs (the table arrangement after lunch was much better); small groups; writing for children; publisher's rep on approaches to getting published; another science speaker/s; always a poet; same as this year as the mix worked well.
BUSINESS
Pre-Scribe 2. Rodney clarified several points on the guidelines for Pre-Scribe 2 and the 2-stage submission process. The inclusion of art work adds a new dimension this year and some members spoke of their experiences in this area. [The submission guidelines were emailed out some time ago so if you have not received a copy please let me know.] People are encouraged to begin submitting material.
Book Borrowing Cupboard. This is available for anyone in the group to make use of and to add to. People are responsible for their own books.
Garadivalia Festival. This takes place in and around Warragul during the whole month of October. We, as writers, have been asked to participate. More details next month.
WELCOME
A welcome was extended to newcomers: Barbara Erskine, Lee Brown and Liz Jacobsen. It was also good to see 'returnees': Carmel Brotherton and Bill Frew.
WORKSHOPPING
After supper we broke into two groups of eight with Olive and Esther leading one group and Rodney and Janet the other. The rationale behind, and process of, work shopping was explained and then several pieces in each group were discussed. It was a profitable and enlightening evening!
***
We meeting closed after 9. Thanks to the two Barbaras and Esther for an abundant supper – which we didn't do justice to! For August it is Karen Pierrehumbert and Liz Jacobsen's turn. Our next meeting is on Thursday, August 19th at the Old Drouin Butter Factory. We meet at 6.15 for business and at 7.00 for the presentation and work-shopping. June 2010 Meeting Minutes
PRESENT
Jeannie Haughton, Esther Martin, Maree Wallace, Janet Marsh, Toby Hansen, Jean Marler, Tanya Dawes, Mary Young, Merrilyn Mawmun, Jo Van de Burgt, Carol Campbell, Karen Pierrehumbert (12)
APOLOGIES
Rodney Williams, Olive Lyon, Geraldine Burrowes and Robyn Wade
TREASURER'S REPORT
Deece has had to step down from her role as Treasurer because of family commitments. We acknowledged the marvellous job she has done in 'setting up the books' and for the work she has put into them. Thank you Deece. Fortunately Tanya is willing (and able) to take on this role. The meeting fully endorsed this change of position. Thanks Tanya. [Moved by Jeannie and seconded by Janet]
MINUTES
The Minutes were read and accepted. [Moved by Jo and seconded by Maree]
MATTERS ARISING
Playing with Words. We are all set to go with our annual Event on July 11at the Warragul Arts Centre. Karen Whitaker-Taylor, on behalf of the Baw Baw Shire, is paying for the catering. Maree is looking after publicity and Tanya is doing the poster-run around Warragul, Drouin and surrounds, and also talking with the owner of 'Red Door' to invite his participation. People are encouraged to forward the email poster, which was sent out last week, to any who are interested. (Tanya and I are experiencing some problems getting it onto FB. If anyone knows how to convert files please let us know.)
If you haven't registered yet please do so at [email protected]
The finer details of the day will be taken care of by the Events Committee: Jeannie, Tanya, Maree and Janet. (Things like a float, registration templates, name badges, etc.)
BUSINESS
Jeannie presented the Publishing Guidelines and Website Guidelines for BBWN. Esther has also agreed to be part of the Editorial Committee for our group. Thanks Esther. These Guidelines are available on request.
Maree noted that our next meeting coincides with a Creative Gippsland event. She has offered to attend this meeting and report back to us. (Pity it's a clash.)
MAINTAINING MOMENTUM
Book Borrowing Cupboard. Don't forget to utilise our new facility. There are several 'writers books' available for borrowing (and returning). Please feel free to bring more along for others to share. People are responsible for their own books.
Our next project. We will tackle this after the 'Playing with Words'Event.
WELCOME
Karen Pierrehumbert attended for the first time – welcome Karen and thanks for your input. It was also lovely to see Carol, from Lakes Entrance, again.
PRESENTATION
Jeannie offered an excellent presentation on 'Writing for Radio'. Several pieces of music were played and our responses noted. It was amazing what feelings and impressions these pieces evoked. Radio is the easiest of mediums to turn off, so in the first few minutes it's important that a mood is created and our attention grabbed by a question, an interesting character, or an unexpected event. Jeannie offered notes and has also sent additional info out by email. Jeannie opened our ears and eyes to the possibilities of this different form of writing and also encouraged people to consider reading on the local radio station.
***
The meeting closed after 9 and thanks to Jo and Esther for a delicious supper. (Jo brought home-made scones, home-made rhubarb jam and cow-made cream. Wow!) Our next meeting is on Thursday, July 15th at the Old Drouin Butter Factory. We meet at 6.15 for business and at 7.00 for the presentation and work-shopping. Everyone is invited to attend both parts of the evening. Please bring along your 'works in progress' to share with others, name badges – and dress warmly.

TREASURER'S REPORT
No report – we missed you Deece!
MINUTES
The Minutes were read and accepted. [Moved by Olive and seconded by Kat]
MATTERS ARISING
Retreat. There were mixed reviews of the Retreat. All agreed that the venue was idyllic (thanks to Olive for the suggestion) and that a day focused on writing was always something to look forward to. Some found the presenter to be inspirational and helpful whilst others found her to be less so. We did, however, return home with a clearer view: we could resource a day's retreat ourselves. There could be more work-shopping (of even longer pieces) and we would simply pay for the catering. Two more ideas surfaced: that our once-a-month meeting is not enough, and that an annual Retreat should be placed on our calender.
CORRESPONDENCE
Jeannie alerted everyone to the Warragul Community House 'Literary Lunch' on Saturday May 29th, 12 noon – 2pm. The cost is $10 per head. Contact the WCH for more details and to book: XXXX-XXX/XXXX-XXXX [email protected] (I will be at the Emerging Writers' Festival in Melbourne.)
There wasn't time to present it at the meeting but we've been asked to write 300 words on the BBWN for the 'Regional Round-up' in the VWC magazine. This will be for the next issue and the deadline is Monday June 7th. I've said we'd love to! Any offers?
BUSINESS
Playing with Words. Our annual Event is on July 11. Presently we are in discussion with Karen Whitaker-Taylor re the Arts Centre as a venue. The downside is we have to use their caterers (which could prove expensive). The alternative is the McMillan Centre. The group are happy for the President and Secretary to make the final decision re venue. The cost is likely to be $20 per person.
Re presenters so far we are considering:
Peter Bakowski (poetry and marketing our work)
The Science Team (sci-fi and sci-fact)
John Irving from TAFE (prose)
Anita George (poetry into art)
Lara Whitehead (editing)
Book Borrowing Cupboard, we now have a cupboard in the ODBF – thanks to Jeannie – and there are several 'writers books' available for borrowing (and returning). Please feel free to bring more along for others to share. People are responsible for their own books.
Urn, we also have a hot-water urn, which can be left at the ODBF, so there are no longer huge queues for supper. Again, thank you, Jeannie.
Our next project, there was considerable discussion re our next anthology/CD, e.g. should there be a theme, what's the world limit, and title? In the end it was decided to ask Tanya, Rod and Janet to form a committee and bring along guidelines to the next meeting. Our aim would be to involve more of the 'Gippsland Artists Group' by way of calligraphy, photography, and art. We will set up a gmail account for work to be sent into.
Website -ta da! Jami firstly apologised for a recent terse email (accepted!) and then we got into discussion re 'what should be on the website?' Our address is www.bawbawwriters.org and the email is [email protected]
The 250meg website will include info on competitions, events, retreats etc. Links into VWC, Overland, Wet Ink, Meanjin, Island, and Griffith Review.
We may use Picasa for photographs and Jami requests that you let him know if you DO NOT want your photograph to appear on the website.
There is a counter to see how many 'hits' we register and we may choose to advertise those who sponsor us: Bendigo Bank, Baw Baw Shire, VWC, Landmark School Supplies, 3BBR and ODBF.
A question was raised re what aspects of our work should appear on the website? Tanya gave ideas re 'floating fiction' and it was recalled that any unpublished work to appear on a web-site is then regarded as published. Jami and Jeannie will be the website committee and present guidelines at the next meeting. Jami then led us into the website … we are on our way! Many thanks, Jami and well done!
WELCOME
Jo Van de Burgt was welcomed into the group. She has done a Creative Writing course at Deakin and has written poetry, screen plays and prose, in the past but is looking for fresh inspiration. (You've come to the right place, Jo!) Barbara Perry, who came to the Retreat, was also new to the meeting – sorry we forgot to officially welcome you, Barbara, hopefully we did it at the Retreat. (Contact details on the attached,up-dated Contact List.)
PRESENTATION
Jean Marler presented 'Creating Poetry' with full notes as well as courageously producing a booklet entitled 'Some Poems from the Best Poets'! The craft of poetry involves time and skill in order to convey one central idea in the most befitting of language. To quote Jean, 'With thousands of words at his disposal, a poet will endeavour to use as few as possible to say what he wants to say!' Or as Alexander Pope put it:
True ease in Writing comes from Art, not Chance,
As those move easiest who have learn'd to dance.'
Get learning and get practising folks! And thank you, Jean for a marvellous presentation.
ROUND-UP AND SUGGESTIONS
The whole group shared their writing achievements, or lack of them. Competitions are being entered or considered, so overall we are alive and well.
Please bring along a name badge next time – preferably one with your own name on it.

TREASURER'S REPORT
Deece presented a detailed Report, the Chapbook, Prescribe, cost $690 to produce and sales came to $1,129. This left us with a profit of $439. The Poetry Evening, in conjunction with the Ficofolia Festival, costs amounted to $1,217. We brought in $1,833, which left us with a profit of $616.The bank balance stands at $1,807.05. The Report was accepted. [Moved by Deece, seconded by Maree]Thank you Deece. People were encouraged to pay their subscriptions for the year [$20/$15] and also the $10 fee for the Retreat this weekend.
MINUTES
The Minutes were read and accepted. [Moved by Kathy and seconded by Esther]
MATTERS ARISING
Regarding the Easter Saturday event, three members attended but it was agreed that there had been a lack of communication. Jeannie will send Laurie Collins's details to Janet who will, nevertheless, write and thank him for the invitation.
Jeannie is to explore, with Bill Frew, the possibility of celebrating the Winter Solstice.
Re Community Grants, the idea has been suggested of recording a CD, with Tod Cooke, a local musician, who also plays the didgeridoo. This would be incorporated with readings from the BBWN. It would be necessary to produce work of a high enough standard to warrant this endeavour.
Website. By the next meeting Jami will produce a budget which will enable him to go ahead with creating and managing our website. Discussion was held re .com and .org and the $45 fee for a 2 year domain server. [Good work Jami]
Members were encouraged to attend the Rotary meeting in Trafalgar tomorrow night which launches the Weekend Arts Festival. [?] It is being held at the Baw Baw Shire Technical Institute and begins at 7.30. The cost is $20. At this meeting the winners of the Traf Tales Competition will be announced. [How exciting!]
Next month we will plan the Playing with Words workshop scheduled for July 11th.
Retreat. There will be 15-17 of us at the Retreat on Sunday, 18th April. Paddy O'Reilly is the guest presenter and we look forward to an inspiring day, returning home with a clearer view on things. We will meet at the Arts Centre car park in Warragul at 8.45 and make our way out to Clearview Farm Retreat, Van Ess Road, in Ferndale. The phone number is: (0)3 5626 4263 if you get lost.
CORRESPONCENCE
Jeannie has received an email from R I Aus, which is a free range science and technology group who are interested in working in the community to promote science and science fiction. Jeannie will explore what they are proposing. This is a genre we have not explored very much and there was a great deal of interest.
WELCOME
Mary Young, who has recently moved into the area, was welcomed into the group. She is already a prolific writer, so, make yourself at home, Mary!
PROGRAMME
In preparation for the Retreat, Jeannie led a thought-provoking session on 'setting'; how we create a world in which everything happens. At the Retreat we will be working in a different setting and it remains to be seen as to how that will affect our writing. Jeannie drew on several well-known authors to illustrate their use of language in shaping context, and then we shared the books which have made an impact on us by their very settings. Thank you, Jeannie, it was very worthwhile.
Offerings from Jami, Jean and Kat were then work shopped. Thank you all for poetry, a very short story and some dramatic fiction.
CELEBRATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
Tanya shared on her experience being interviewed for the Herb Thomas Memorial Award. Keep us posted, Tanya.
Esther brought along an article from the British Guardian on tips for writers, this led to a discussion on the sharing of resources. Many members have numerous books on writing, short stories and magazines. It was suggested that we bring them along to the next and subsequent meetings and share them around. It will be necessary to keep track of them in some way.
Another suggestion was made regarding longer pieces of writing. These are generally too long to be read out loud at the regular meetings, so why not break into groups of 2-4 and email our work to each other for comment and critique?
We will follow these suggestions through next month.
The meeting closed after 9 and thanks to Jeannie and Kathy for supper. Our next meeting is on Thursday, May 20th. We meet at 6.15 for business and at 7.00 for the presentation and work shopping. Everyone is invited to attend both parts of the evening. Please bring along your 'works in progress' to share with others.

CATCH UP
The Poetry Evening in connection with the Ficofolia Festival went very well and people were inspired by the BBWN's contributions.
TREASUREER'S REPORT
In Deece's absence (we missed you, Deece) Jeannie presented a brief report: we made a profit on the Chapbooks, and to date our account stands at $1,845.05.
GENERAL BUSINESS
Farm World. We have an opportunity for reading and speaking from 11am to 12 noon on Saturday, March 27th at the Baw Baw Shire Pavilion, Lardner Park. There will be several other groups also presenting their work including schools and singing and dance groups. Everyone is welcome.
Playing With Words.A date has been set for our annual 'Event'. Mark July 11th in your diaries. Peter Balowski has been invited to speak.
Retreat. There is the possibility of our holding a One-Day Retreat on 18 April at Clearview Farm. Paddy O'Reilly has been asked to conduct it. The hold-up is regarding our funding for the 'Event'. As soon as we have more information we will let you know.
Easter Saturday. The Combined Churches of Drouin have given us an 'open mike' opportunity on Saturday, April 3rd to share at their Easter Weekend Arts Festival. The theme is 'The Journey' and the venue is The Old Drouin Butter Factory. (We will notify you of the time in the next day or so.)
Community Grants. The question was posed: 'What do we WANT to do, as a group, this year that will require funding?' Three suggestions came up: a Short Story Competition,a Spoken Word Poetry Competition, along the lines of 'Poetry Idol' – but not quite! And a kind of 'Winter Solstice' celebration. If we apply for funding to run any 'Event' there has to be a strong community outcome within the Baw Baw Shire.
Traf Tales Competition. We were all encouraged to enter this local competition. The closing date is April 9th 2010. Check out the website for more details: www.rotarytrafalgar.org
Website. Jami is working on a website and email address for the BBWN! Go Jami!
PROGRAMME
Jean led a great session dealing with characterisation: one character's perception of another character without, necessarily, the use of description; more 'show' than 'tell'. She used several well known authors to illustrate the process. Their succinct use of language was inspiring.
Rodney shared the good news of his recent successes in poetry publication – well done, Rodney, may your tribe increase!
Janet read a short story for work shopping; it is now a work in progress.
The meeting closed at 9.10 and thanks to Robyn, Jami and Rod for supper. Our next meeting is on Thursday, April 15th. We meet at 6.15 to plan and discuss the programme and at 7.00 we execute it! Please bring along a piece of work to share with others.

In conjunction with the annual Ficofolia Festival, held in Drouin, this event is hosted at the Old Butter Factory on Friday, February 12th from 7-10pm. The cost per ticket is $12. There is a great programme organised and we have a ten-minute opportunity for us, as a group or individuals, to fill.
The theme this year is “This Sporting Life”. There was animated discussion and if you have anything you'd like critiqued for reading on the night please email it to Rodney or Olive or Jean to look over. (Yes! Jean is out of the email closet for BBWN only! Her address is: [email protected])
Those who wish to participate in this event please meet together beforehand at 6pm for a 7pm start. If anyone else wishes to help Jeannie clean up the venue please email her for arrival times during the day.
Kathy will be 'at front of house'(22 tickets need to be offered to the Ficofolia Committee). Jami and Geraldine have offered to help with catering. ( A strong request was made for firmer cheeses as well as the fruit) Cleaning sponges, plastic gloves, and antiseptic hand-wash will be provided. Kuwai (spelling?) Winery will supply wine and glasses. Coffee (instant – aaghh) and tea are served at half-time and Kathy and Maree are looking after that. (80-100 people are expected.)

AD HOC TREASURER'S REPORT
Deece was unable to be at the meeting so will email a detailed report out later. Presently we have $1,845.05 in the bank.
THREAD STORY
The 'Thread Story' was read out and received with enthusiasm. Some points of difficulty were noted: names, point of view, numbers to be written not numbered, and it was important to keep the last ten words as the opening of the following segment.
We have set ourselves another writing exercise: 200 words on 'This Sporting Life'. This is the order and it is requested that it be done asap:
1. Kathy 2. Esther 3. Olive 4. Jami 5. Jeannie 6. Carol 7. Geraldine 8. Janet 9. Tanya 10. Jean 11. Deece 12. Doug 13. Angela 14. Rodney 15. Maree 16. Robyn 17. Merrilyn
CHAPBOOK SALES
Most of the books have sold and feedback has ranged from excellent to good to 'what's the point?' (The latter can probably be dismissed!) Deece will present a breakdown of costings/profits in her report.)
SUBSCRIPTIONS
A few members are found wanting: ($20 and $15 concession.)
