A bit of background... In 2004, a group of writers and readers from the Baw Baw region of Gippsland organised a writing festival in conjunction with the Melbourne Writers' Festival. This successful event went on to be held for the next several years.
In 2006, the group of writers incorporated, becoming The Baw Baw Writers' Network (BBWN). In 2009, BBWN published the first installment of Pre-Scribe: an anthology of members' writing. This was followed by Pre-Scribe 2 and then, you guessed it, Pre-Scribe 3. It's almost a yearly event (Pre-Scribe 4 followed in early 2013 and 2014 saw the publication of Pre-Scribe 5.
The way it works is members submit their short pieces of prose or poetry to the editorial committee who then put the publication together. Local artists are invited to contribute artwork either on the cover or within the pages. Pre-Scribe is one of the most rewarding and exciting opportunities that the BBWN offers, not just for writers who get to see their work accepted and in print, but also for the committee putting it together and selling it. Pre-Scribe is sold locally in Yarragon at the Station Gallery.
BBWN continues to meet monthly and holds events throughout the year that support and nourish local writers. Meetings are held monthly on the third Thursday of each month (but not January usually) at either the Drouin Library, in the side meeting room or at Cafe Obsession, 71 Princes Hwy, Trafalgar. Meetings start at 7pm. Everyone is welcome.
